Nettie Hawes by Kathy Frizzelle, great-granddaughter of Nettie Hawes, 2011 My grandmother was Mary Lou Steele. Her mother was Nettie Hawes and her father was Leslie Black Steele. From what I gathered from my Granny, Grandmother(Nettie) had a rather unfortunate life to say the least. She left Papa (Leslie) somewhere around 1917 for Texas to stay with family out there. Granny always said that she divorced him because she remarried, but I am not even sure where to start looking for those records. Anyway, soon after getting to Dallas she remarried to a man named Jim Martin. They had a daughter that she named Jessie after her brother, Jesse Hawes. Soon after having Jessie she became pregnant again. Jim was not happy. Granny and my Aunt Adele were both very young, but said they could remember Jim screaming at her that she would not have the baby. They said that one day he brought "a doctor" home with him to get rid of the baby and their mother was dead within two days of this. They never really believed he was an actual doctor or, if he was, he had been thrown out of his practice. I found a copy of her death certificate online one time, and it stated cause of death as "septic abortion." Jim then had Granny and Adele put in an orphans' home in Dallas. They stayed there for a few years until Papa finally discovered where they were and sent for them. By this time Adele had left the home to get married; she stayed in Dallas for several years before returning to Alabama in the late 1960s. Adele had two children when she lived in Dallas, one remains there and one returned to Sand Mountain before her mother and met and married the love of her life. She stayed here until her death in 2005. Granny came home as soon as Papa sent for her and stayed with various aunts and cousins because at this time Papa had not remarried and worked out of town quite a bit.
