Part 1

Day 1: Fredricton, NB, to Sackville, NB
Sackville is in the southeast corner of NB, just before Nova Scotia.

Day2: Sackville, NB, to Antigonish, NS
Crossed into Nova Scotia and followed the Sunrise Trail along the northern shore of Nova Scotia; visited the Hector Heritage Quay in Pictou (known as the birthplace of "New Scotland").

Day3: Antigonish, NS, to Cheticamp, CBI, NS
Crossed the Canso Causeway onto Cape Breton Island; followed the Ceilidh Trail along the northern shore of CBI; mostly Scottish settlements; becomes Acadian about three-quarters up; Cheticamp is the center of Acadian culture in CBI.

Day4: Drive out from Cheticamp, then back
Followed Cabot Trail partway through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park; turned around after reaching maximum elevation; freezing rain began to fall.

Day5: Chetticamp, NS, to Ingonish Ferry, NS
Repeated previous day's drive, then proceeded on around and through the CBHNP; looked in on the swanky Keltic Lodge in Ingonish.

Day6: Ingonish Ferry, NS, to Baddeck, NS
Continued following Cabot Trail; stopped for two nights in Baddeck on the shore of the Bras d'Or Lakes.

Day7: Loop out from Baddeck and back
Side trip to the Highland Village (reconstructed Scottish settler village) in Iona, on shore of Bras d'Or Lakes.

Day8: Baddeck, NS, to Sackville, NB
Gray, drizzly day; proceeded quickly to Sackville, with brief stops at saw mill and grist mill museums.

Day9: Sackville, NB, to Bouctouche, NB
Followed the Acadian Trail up the east coast of NB; took long walk on dunes boardwalk; overnight in a B&B in Bouchtouche; learned a few words in French.

Day 10: Bouctouche, NB, to Newcastle, NB
Spent most of day in Kouchibouguac National Park on the east coast of NB; overnight in Newcastle, just west of Miramichi.

Day 11: Newcastle, NB, to Fredricton, NB
Followed the Miramichi River Trail to Fredricton; brief stops at a salmon museum and a woodmen's museum.
